Flat Rock Rotary WHKP Interview September 7th 2010

The following is an Interview that Karen Anntonuci and I got to do on WHKP at 8 am on Tuesday the 7th of September for our Flat Rock Rotary.

What is the purpose of Rotary?

Rotary is a unique combination of a business networking club and a service organization. It presents an opportunity for local business people to meet and fellowship with one another, talk about and implement community service projects, and pass business ethics down to the next generation of young business people.

Why would someone want to join the Flat Rock Rotary Club?

One of the primary reasons someone would want to join us in Flat Rock is that we are the only local Rotary Club that meets after work. This allows those of us who have full time jobs the opportunity to participate in community development without interfering with our work day schedule. So for those that wold like to be in a Rotary Club, but find that the early morning or lunch time slots don’t work for them have a great alternative.

Another fact that we would like to highlight is that we are a low overhead club, meaning that since we don’t have the added expense of meals with our meetings our membership dues are far lower than is typical of Rotary Clubs.

The other advantage that I would like to highlight, and one of the main reasons we are here, is that this is a new club that will be chartering this year. People have the opportunity to become a founding charter member of an organization that will be helping the community for many years to come.

What are some of the projects your club has participated in, and what do you have planned for the future?

Most recently we got the opportunity to help out Big Brothers / Big Sisters with their Back to School Supply Drive. We worked with Jeff Kowalak of Big Brothers to gather a huge quantity of school supplies which will go to help out in our local schools for underprivileged kids. The supplies were mostly earmarked to go to Upward Elementary, so we really got to help out a local school.

One of the things I am most proud of is sponsoring a young lady to attend the RYLA Youth Leadership Camp that takes place every year in Brevard. The kids get to hear a bunch of great speeches on leadership, participate in team building exercises, and develop self-confidence and leadership skills with their peers in a fun environment. I have had the honor of presenting a health and fitness talk the last 3 years, and always come away inspired by the potential youth leaders there.

We have a Clean Sweep Community Clean-up coming up in the near future, and we will be continuing to work with our local schools and Big Brothers / Big Sisters. Members of our club will also be helping out with the March of Dimes in Hendersonville. I am very excited to be helping out in these kinds of Projects!

You have a big Open House Membership Event Coming up soon, can you tell us a little about that?

Our club is holding an Open House Membership Event on Thursday September the 23rd from 5:15 to 8:00 pm at the Woodfield Inn in downtown Flat Rock. We will be serving light refreshments and sharing the opportunity for local businessmen and future community leaders to experience our vision for improving our local community. This is a drop in event, and we would be delighted to fellowship with you!

Where can our listeners find out more information about this event and the Flat Rock Rotary Club.

You can always find out the latest information by checking our website @ www.FlatRockRotary.org . The absolute best way to find out more is to come visit us! We meet every Thursday evening at 5:15 pm at the Woodfield Inn in Downtown Flat Rock.
