Have you ever had any nagging injuries that you just couldn’t seem to get to go away?
As an athlete, injury is one of the worst things for us, because they interfere with what we want to be doing: namely training and competing. It isn’t so much the pain, but the inconvenience!
Overcoming injuries usually involves lots of rest, going to doctors, getting expensive medical tests, physical therapy, and Lots of frustration. Below is a video of a client who had done all that and more for 8 months, without any real improvement.
While all the professionals were well intentioned, they couldn’t seem to resolve the problem. Dena wanted to run and hike, not just be able to walk and sit pain free. As an athlete, I really get where she was coming from. All I really did was to step back and look at her baseline posture, and a few simple exercise movement tests. It seemed obvious to me that while the pain was present on one side, the problem was elsewhere.
Pain rarely shows up at the site of the real issue!
The pain was a side effect of a disfunction on the opposite hip. By strengthening the stabilizers on the opposite side, Dena was able to get back to what she really wanted to be doing in a matter of weeks. This is NOT about any particular muscle group or therapy modality. It’s about looking for the ROOT of pain and eliminating it.
Let’s stop trying to treat symptoms, and actually fix the problem. Looking at deviations from proper posture will give you so many clues if you’ll just take a step back to look.
